Southwest Council

The Southwest Council, Inc. is a private, non-profit, health agency providing prevention, education, early intervention, and outpatient treatment services to the NJ counties of Cumberland, Salem, and Gloucester.

Our sole mission is to reduce the prevalent abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Prevention: Addressing addiction, through community partnerships and evidence-based programs. Education: Programs in school and community settings, implemented by prevention specialists. Treatment: A private facility, personalized care and a licensed team of professionals.

Founded in 1991 as a primary Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention services provider, The Southwest Council’s sole mission is to reduce the prevalence of abuse of these harmful substances. The Southwest Council’s goal is to increase awareness about ATOD related problems in our communities, schools, businesses, and professional organizations, as well as assisting families and individuals by offering services and referrals whenever possible.

As an agency, The Southwest Council, Inc. is committed to improving the health and welfare of residents of Cumberland, Salem, and Gloucester Counties so that children and families can thrive and grow to be strong, responsible individuals. The agency has evolved to meet the changing needs of residents across the lifespan by initiating innovative and evidenced-based prevention and intervention services that fortify communities and the families, schools, and businesses that comprise them.

The Southwest Council is a member of the New Jersey Prevention Network, a state-wide corporation linking prevention services throughout the entire state of New Jersey. The Southwest Council, Inc. is funded by federal, state and county grants, as well as private contracts, corporate sponsorships, and individual contributions. As a tax exempt agency, all contributions made to The Southwest Council, Inc. are tax deductible.

Our prevention goal is to increase awareness about alcohol, tobacco and other drug related problems in our communities, schools, businesses, and professional organizations.

We do this primarily through two strategies: evidence-based education programs  and community-based prevention coalitions.

We offer a wide variety of evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs in our three service counties. The targeted populations for these programs range across the lifespan.

Most of the Southwest Council’s evidence-based drug prevention or educational programs take place in school settings, although they have also been provided in community and faith-based settings. In our experience, the most effective programs are delivered interactively and teach skills that assist individuals to refuse drug offers, resist pro-drug influences, correct misperceptions that drug use is normative, and enhance social and personal competence skills.

The Southwest Council provides addiction treatment to adults aged 18 and older. Call 1-800-856-9609 to make an appointment.

Our private facility offers personalized care and a licensed team of professionals to assist with recovery and wellness. By using the 12-Step Model and an array of evidenced based counseling techniques, individuals can move toward improved physical, spiritual, and emotional health. The Counseling Center provides an avenue for individuals to explore treatment needs and gain insight into personal goals through extended assessment and outpatient treatment services.
